Project Background
The Simandou mining project requires a dedicated power plant to support phase-I mine construction and operation. In remote mining areas, stable power supply is essential for production equipment, auxiliary facilities, communication systems and site infrastructure. The power station must also consider future capacity expansion as the mining project develops.
SWT Solution
The project is planned with a fixed diesel power station using medium-speed generator sets. The phase-I system adopts a 10.5kV generation design, with generator units connected to sectionalized 10.5kV busbars. Through 2 × 50MVA, 35/10kV step-up transformers, the power station supplies electricity to the mine at 35kV voltage level. The design also considers phase-II expansion, when the power station capacity is planned to increase to 40MW.
Key Features
- Mining power plant solution for a remote large-scale mining project.
- 6 × 4347kW medium-speed generator sets based on MAN-9L32/40 engine platform.
- 5kV generation system with sectionalized busbar arrangement.
- 35kV power supply to the mine through 2 × 50MVA step-up transformers.
- Designed with supporting systems including fuel, lubricating oil, cooling, intake and exhaust, control and electrical systems, and black start system.
Project Value
This project demonstrates SWT’s capability in medium-speed power plant system design and project execution for remote mining applications. Compared with standard generator set supply, mining power plant projects require integrated planning for auxiliary systems, logistics, construction, commissioning and long-term operation under demanding site conditions.
